File Types and Sizes
TIFF = “Tagged-Image File Format” is used
to exchange files between applications and computer platforms.
In digital cameras, TIFF is used to produce a “lossless” image
format, i.e. one that does not throw away any information.
JPEG = The most common image format among
digital cameras. This format produces relatively small files
from large amounts of image data by discarding certain information.
JPEG uses a “compression algorithm” with the ability to reduce
an image file size by 4, 8 or 16 to 1 with minimal degradation
in image quality. At 4:1 or 6:1 compression, a 3.3 Mega Pixel
camera will produce a 1.6 MB file that is almost indistinguishable
from the same image saved as a TIFF image at 9.2MB.

How can I get the best quality of my video?
Will the quality become better if I transfer my MPEG1 file
into MPEG2 file at higher resolution and higher bit rate?

What are CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW,
DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM?
Basically there are four different types of media on the
shelf today – CD-Rewritable, DVD-Rewritable, DVD+Rewritable
and DVD-RAM. CD-R has been on the market for a couple years.
Three new comers have backward compatible to CD-Rewritable
media but have trouble with each other in certain way. The
incompatibility is improving now.

What are VCD, SVCD, DVD and DVD
on CD?
VCD stands for Video CD in contrast to Audio CD which is
normally logoed as Compact Disc on your music CD.
SVCD is in half way between VCD and DVD which uses CD-ReWritable
media to achieve near-DVD quality. In Asia and Europe, it
is getting popular because of the low cost of CD media.
DVD is the most common media to hold high quality movie.

What is the relationship between
VCD/SVCD/DVD and MPEG?
VCD/SVCD/DVD are format stored in optical disc and MPEG is
a technology to compress audio and video data.
VCD uses MPEG1 technology to compress data into 352x240 in
NTSC, 352x288 in PAL.
SVCD uses MPEG 2 technology to compress data into 480x480
in NTSC, 480x576 in PAL.
DVD uses MPEG2 technology to compress data. DVD can accept
a variety selection of different resolution. Most common ones
are 720x480 in NTSC and 720x576 in PAL.
